In 2004 the journey began with a short term trip to Dolval, Haiti. It was apparent from that very first short term trip that something was happening and things would never be the same for me. From 2004 – 2007 strong relationships were developed in a little village in the northeast mountain region of Haiti, so strong that the elders of the village asked if I would come and live with them as a full time missionary and work with their children.

As I prayed and searched God’s word, I asked the question “Why Haiti? Lord, I have nothing to offer them, why would you send me there?” And in the quiet time of meditation, God made it clear. He was not sending me to Haiti, He was sending me to the Harvest Field. Haiti was just where He was allowing the journey to begin.

Matthew 9:37-38 (NIV) Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Preparations began but unfortunately, in 2008 the sending organization had to pull out of the village and it was no longer possible to go to Dolval and live there. I began to think that the journey was over for me, but God says in Philippians 1:6, “that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

It was because of God’s call on Tony and Marci McCarver’s life that my dream of being in full time service is still possible. They invited me to come and join their organization working in South America, mainly in Bolivia and Brazil. Over the last few years, I became a team facilitator for Brazil. Recently I have become the Director of Brazil. I have a great love and passion for hurting people. I love working with the children and teaching them about the love that God has for them, and I never thought I would say it, but I love praying with people.

It is my prayer that God opens the door for me to serve full time in Brazil alongside the missionaries in Iranduba. Though the people group has changed, the call has not.

While still working on the dream of full time service, I have been serving in my community working with the homeless. Several churches have joined together and we do several events through the year to help those who have no place to call home. Our biggest event is Thanksgiving. At that event, we provide a hot meal, coats and blankets, medical screening, haircuts, toiletries, counseling, and just someone to listen if they want to talk. Plans are in the making for more events through the year.

Acts 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

I have had people tell me that the money could be put to better use if the money was sent to the people and not used to send teams down for a week. How much can you possible accomplish in a week? Let me share a little piece of an email that I received from our missionary in Brazil:

“Also, I am beginning a women's Bible study at the little church on Saturday afternoon. One of the ladies said, "I have been wishing for something like this for so long!" So all of a sudden things are beginning to happen. I know the team had a very positive impact and perhaps in some ways "broke the ice". So just know again that God used all of you for His glory.”

Yes, short term teams are beneficial. If God calls you and you obediently answer His call, it will never return void. You never know whose life you might have influenced and changed forever.

Isaiah 6:8 (NIV) Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

I was able to visit Doval, Haiti in 2012. As I walked down the street of Dolval, people came out to meet me calling me by name. One of the teens that I taught while serving there is now a Deacon in the church. One of the girls that I taught is now a mother of an adorable 5 year old boy and is a vital part of the church. It was such a wonderful reunion and a chance for lots of hugs and tears. God is good all the time and all the time, God is good!
