It all started when…

God first moved us towards missions in 1995. Cindy joined a team from Orange Hill Baptist Church to serve in Slatina and Bucharest, Romania. We both traveled on two additional short term trips to Romania within the next 5 years to work with Grace Baptist and Pastor Viorel Cruceru. It was a blessing to serve the poor in villages, work with orphans and worship God with the church at Grace.

During the coming years we also served in Jamaica, Mexico, West Virginia and with local ministries serving the poor as well as several trips with Samaritans Purse.  We continued our relationship with Viorel but had not return to Slatina until December 2016.

In fall of 2016 we were led by the Lord for a longer term mission.  It was during our December 2016 trip that the Lord called us to serve 3 years in Slatina. The people of southern Romania are almost 100% Eastern Orthodox. They are considered to be born into this religion. With the extreme poverty and former impact of communism on the culture, their Orthodox beliefs are very important to them.  Their belief system relies on “religious” leaders to tell them about the Bible and, as a result, they do not know God’s word and are lacking a personal relationship with God.

During our time in Slatina we have had many opportunities to minister and in a variety of ways. Some opportunities included Bible study with believers and non-believers, practicing English with local high schoolers, help with youth camps and with construction on the church building in Slatina, as well as some critical needs with a village pastors’ home. Our primary focus in the coming months will be evangelism. 

As we continue to serve wherever God may lead, we are looking for others to partner in whatever way they can through prayer and/or finances.  For those who choose to support our ministry financially please be aware that donations sent to MRI must note “Stephens ministry” so that it will be applied to our ministry expenses. (Details below)
